Poker Table Selection: A Practical Review Framework

· Updated Sep 10, 2026 · 8 min read

Good table selection starts with observable conditions and ends with a review of your own decisions. A label such as “soft” is not evidence, and a generic bb/100 promise cannot describe your result.

The effect of any table choice depends on your skill, rake, position, effective stacks, format, sample, and the accuracy of the information available when you joined. Record those inputs before judging the outcome.

Start with conditions you can observe

Separate detection from judgment

Monitoring can tell you that a table is running and has space. Historical data can show how players behaved in recorded hands. Neither fact tells you automatically that sitting is profitable.

LuckyBun Edge sends an alert when an eligible table has an open seat. It does not auto-seat, play, or guarantee that the game is good. The player makes the final decision.

Build a repeatable review loop

  1. Write down why you joined a table.
  2. Record the stake, ante state, table size, seat position, and relevant opponents.
  3. Review the session without using the monetary result as the only score.
  4. Compare your original read with the hand-history evidence.
  5. Update the rule you use for future sessions.

This process protects against outcome bias. Winning one session does not prove the table was good, and losing one does not prove the selection was wrong.

Use player labels as hypotheses

Terms such as regular, recreational player, or weak player compress a lot of uncertainty into one word. Keep the evidence attached: observed hands, format, date range, and behavior. A player can change strategy, play a different stake, or share a nickname across imperfect data.

Measure your own selection process

A useful dashboard tracks alert-to-seat rate, time spent waiting, hands played by format, and the reasons you left. Winrate can be reviewed later over a meaningful sample, but it should not be promised in advance.

Monitor tables. Study the hands.
