Table Selection in Poker: The Skill That Doubles Your Winrate

Most grinders spend hundreds of hours studying GTO, running solver sims, and memorizing preflop charts. Then they sit down at a table full of other players who did the exact same thing — and wonder why they can barely beat the rake.

The problem is not their strategy. The problem is their table.

Table selection is the single highest-ROI skill in online poker, and almost nobody treats it seriously. A mediocre player at a great table will consistently outperform a strong player at a tough table. The math is not even close.

The Numbers: How Much Table Selection Is Actually Worth

Let's put concrete estimates on this. Experienced grinders generally agree on the following approximate ranges for additional winrate per recreational player at a 6-max table (these are estimates based on community consensus, not solver-verified figures):

Why Regs Ignore Table Selection

• It feels like "cheating." Studying strategy feels productive. Picking easy tables feels lazy. But poker is a game about finding edges — and the biggest edge is at the table, not in the solver.
• Mass multi-tabling culture. Many players open 12-20 tables and auto-join whatever is available. Volume feels like progress, but volume at tough tables is just high-speed break-even grinding.
• Lack of tools on some networks. On major sites, lobby stats and HUDs make table selection straightforward. On smaller networks, you often cannot see VPIP or average pot size from the lobby — so most players skip the step entirely.

Manual Table Selection: What to Look For

If you are selecting tables by hand, here are the most reliable indicators:

• Average pot size. The single best lobby stat. Large average pots mean someone is putting money in loose. Compare it to other tables at the same stake.
• Players per flop (VPIP%). A table where 40%+ of players see the flop has at least one recreational player.
• Short stacks rebuying. Fish tend to buy in short and reload. If you see a player at 40bb who just topped up to 60bb, that is probably not a reg.
• Time of day. Recreational players play evenings and weekends in their timezone. Friday and Saturday nights are consistently the softest sessions worldwide.
• Wait lists. If a table has a wait list at a stake that normally runs 3-4 tables, something good is sitting there. Get on that list.
