Poker Table Selection: A Practical Review Framework

Good table selection starts with observable conditions and ends with a review of your own decisions. A label such as “soft” is not evidence, and a generic bb/100 promise cannot describe your result.

The effect of any table choice depends on your skill, rake, position, effective stacks, format, sample, and the accuracy of the information available when you joined. Record those inputs before judging the outcome.

Start with conditions you can observe

• Is there an open seat? An interesting table has no value if you cannot join it.
• What is the stake and ante format? Do not compare unlike games.
• Who is currently seated? Use observed hands and recent context, not a permanent label.
• Where is the open seat? Position relative to specific opponents can matter.
• What are the effective stacks? A listed stake does not describe every decision size.
• What does the rake structure do to the game? The cap and table size can change the cost.

Separate detection from judgment

Monitoring can tell you that a table is running and has space. Historical data can show how players behaved in recorded hands. Neither fact tells you automatically that sitting is profitable.
